Nutmeg & Mace (Indonesia, Grenada, India)

ABCD, SS and BWP nutmeg and mace blades, aflatoxin-tested

Nutmeg (HS 0908.11) and mace (HS 0908.21) come from the same fruit of Myristica fragrans: the nut is the seed and mace is the red aril around it, dried to an orange-brown blade. Indonesia is the volume origin, grown across the Maluku islands with Banda the historic centre; UN Comtrade 2024 declarations put Indonesian exports at 14,902 MT of nutmeg at USD 5,580/MT and 4,239 MT of mace at USD 11,531/MT. Grenada grows the same species and sells on quality and provenance, and India is the third origin buyers name. Note that the HS 0908 heading also carries cardamom, which is why Guatemala leads the heading by value in UN Comtrade 2024 (44%) while Indonesia leads the nutmeg and mace lines. Whole nutmeg trades in grades standardised under ISO 6577: ABCD (sound, sorted by count), SS (sound shrivelled) and BWP (broken, wormy, punctured), the lowest grade, bought for fine grinding and for oil distillation. Mace trades as whole blades and broken pieces.

Aflatoxin is the gate on this spice. Nutmeg is one of the spices named in EU Regulation (EU) 2023/915 at 5 µg/kg for aflatoxin B1 and 10 µg/kg for the sum of B1, B2, G1 and G2, and spices other than chillies and paprika are limited to 15 µg/kg of ochratoxin A, so a nutmeg contract for Europe should state both limits and name the laboratory. Pesticide residues run to Regulation (EC) 396/2005; EU lots move with an ETO-free statement because ethylene oxide is not authorised there, and US lots meet EPA tolerances under 40 CFR 180 and FDA entry, where Import Alert 99-19 covers Salmonella in spices. Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
