Galvanized, Galvalume & PPGI Steel Coil (GI / GL / PPGI / PPGL)
Hot-dip GI, galvalume and pre-painted coil by coating mass and paint system
Coated coil is cold-rolled full hard substrate annealed and coated in one continuous line, and every price difference in it comes from four choices: the coating, the coating mass, the base-metal grade and, for pre-painted coil, the paint system. GI is hot-dip zinc: JIS G3302 SGCC and EN 10346 DX51D+Z are the commercial grades, DX52D and DX53D add formability, and S220GD–S350GD+Z are the structural grades a purlin or deck roll-former needs. Coating mass is stated as total grams per square metre on both sides — Z60, Z80, Z100, Z120, Z180 and Z275 in the market's shorthand, with ASTM A653 using G30–G90 — and it is the single biggest driver of corrosion life and of price, so the contract names it and the mill test certificate reports it. GL is galvalume, a 55% aluminium-zinc coating to ASTM A792 or EN 10346 (+AZ), with AZ150 the common roofing mass. PPGI and PPGL are GI or GL substrate with a primer, a top coat and a back coat to EN 10169, JIS G3312 or ASTM A755; the paint system is polyester (RMP), silicone-modified polyester (SMP), high-durability polyester (HDP) or PVDF, and the buyer specifies top-coat and back-coat dry-film thickness in microns and the RAL colour. Spangle is regular, minimised or zero, and surface treatment is chromated, chromate-free passivated, anti-finger-print or oiled; European buyers generally require chromate-free treatment. Thickness and width tolerances follow the named standard, coils run on a 508 mm or 610 mm inner diameter with a weight limit set by the buyer's decoiler, and the mill test certificate reports base-metal chemistry, yield, tensile, elongation, coating mass and, for PPGI, film thickness. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 7210 — a heading that also includes tinplate and other plated or coated flat steel — put the reporter total at USD 51.1 bn and 49.5 Mt, led by China at 23.9 Mt (USD 17.2 bn, about USD 720/MT declared), Korea at 6.45 Mt (about USD 1,028), Germany at 3.58 Mt (about USD 1,128), Japan at 2.24 Mt (about USD 1,041) and Belgium at 2.13 Mt (about USD 1,021).
The buyers are roofing-sheet and sandwich-panel roll-formers, purlin, deck and light-gauge framing producers, appliance makers using PPGI for side panels and GI for back panels, pipe and tube mills making galvanized tube and conduit, duct fabricators, automotive tier suppliers using galvanized stampings, and the steel distributors that stock coil for all of them across Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers galvanized, galvalume and pre-painted coil from Asian and European coating lines and mill-affiliated traders to those buyers, against a mill test certificate to the named standard that states the country where the base steel was melted and poured, with no slab, hot band or full hard substrate of excluded origin in the chain; a coating line in one country often runs substrate melted in another, and the UK and EU steel import measures look at the melt-and-pour country, not the coating country. Coated coil imported into the EU falls under the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), so the EU importer needs the mill's embedded-emissions data as a document alongside the certificate. Anti-dumping, countervailing or safeguard duties on coated flat steel apply in several destinations, and checking the rate for the specific mill and origin at the port of discharge is the buyer's check before contracting. Coils are packed export-seaworthy — VCI or waterproof paper, galvanised steel outer wrap, inner and outer edge protectors, strapped — and shipped eye-to-sky on wooden skids or eye-to-wall on saddles in 20-foot containers for distributor and roll-former lots, or breakbulk in Handysize and multipurpose tonnage for larger parcels, where CBIL's chartering desk (LaycanDesk) quotes the freight with the cargo. Send your product (GI, GL, PPGI or PPGL), standard and grade, gauge-by-width list, coating mass, paint system and film thickness with RAL colours, spangle and surface treatment, coil ID and weight limit, and monthly tonnage.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Galvanized, Galvalume & PPGI Steel Coil (GI / GL / PPGI / PPGL) — buyer questions
Which zinc coating mass should I buy for roofing?
It depends on the climate and the life your customer expects, and it is the main thing that moves the price. Thin coatings such as Z60–Z80 are common in price-driven roofing markets but corrode sooner, especially near the sea; Z180–Z275 GI or AZ150 galvalume is the specification for coastal, humid or long-life roofs. Coating mass is total grams per square metre on both sides, so check that an offer quoting 'Z275' means that and ask for it on the mill test certificate.
GI, GL or PPGI — what is the difference?
GI is hot-dip zinc coated. GL (galvalume) carries a 55% aluminium-zinc coating that generally lasts longer than zinc at the same mass in atmospheric exposure and is widely used bare for roofing. PPGI and PPGL are GI or GL with a factory primer, colour top coat and back coat. Buy PPGI or PPGL when the sheet is sold coloured; specify the paint system (polyester, SMP, HDP or PVDF), the film thickness on both sides and the RAL colour, because those set UV and chalking resistance more than the substrate does.
Why is Chinese coated coil declared so far below Korean or European?
UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 7210 give China about USD 720/MT against Korea about USD 1,028 and Germany about USD 1,128. The heading also covers tinplate and automotive galvanized grades, and European and Korean exports lean to those, while a large share of Chinese tonnage is thinner commodity GI and PPGI for roofing. Compare offers on the same coating mass, thickness, grade and paint system, then add duty at your port — several destinations apply anti-dumping duties to coated coil by origin.
What documents does a galvanized coil import need?
A mill test certificate to the named standard with heat number, base-metal chemistry and mechanicals, coating mass and, for PPGI, film thickness, stating the country where the base steel was melted and poured. The UK and EU check melt-and-pour origin under their steel import measures, and EU imports also need the producer's CBAM embedded-emissions data. Add a packing list by coil number, weight and length, and third-party inspection of gauge, coating mass and packing at load where you want it.
