Grinding Media Steel Balls (Forged & High-Chrome Cast, 20–150 mm)

Forged steel and high-chromium cast grinding balls by diameter, hardness profile and impact toughness for cement and mineral processing mills

Grinding media are the largest consumable in a ball mill and are bought on wear rate and breakage, not on the price per tonne. Two families do the work. Forged balls are hot-forged or roll-forged from medium- and high-carbon steel bar (grades such as 60Mn, 65Mn and the B2 and B3 alloy grades, roughly 0.6–1.1% carbon, 0.5–1.2% manganese and 0.2–1.2% chromium), quenched and tempered to a surface hardness of about 58–65 HRC with a volumetric hardness of about 56–64 HRC and an impact toughness of around 12 J/cm², which is what lets them take the ball-to-ball and ball-to-liner impacts of a large SAG or primary ball mill without spalling. High-chromium cast balls are cast in iron alloyed with about 10–30% chromium, heat-treated to 58–65 HRC, with a surface of 62–65 HRC over a core of 58–62 HRC in the cement grades; they wear far more slowly in abrasive, dry grinding and are the default in cement finish mills and many fine-grinding duties, at a higher price per tonne and a lower tolerance for heavy impact. Sizes run from 20 mm to 150 mm: a two-compartment cement mill carries 50–100 mm balls in the first chamber and 20–50 mm in the second, while a copper concentrator's primary mill may take 100–125 mm forged balls and its regrind mill 25–40 mm. The buyer's specification names the grade, diameter and tolerance, chemistry, surface and volumetric hardness, the impact and drop-ball test the lot must pass, and a breakage ceiling (forged balls are commonly guaranteed at not more than 1% breakage); the mill test certificate and a cut-section hardness traverse are the acceptance documents.

The trade is large and concentrated. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 7326.11 (forged or stamped grinding balls and similar articles for mills) total about USD 1.35 billion and 1.33 million MT, with China at 1.14 million MT (about USD 822/MT declared) and Chile (82,000 MT), Indonesia, Poland, Canada and Thailand following; under HS 7325.91 (cast grinding balls) the total is about USD 709 million and 585,000 MT, led by China (248,000 MT, about USD 1,033/MT), India (162,000 MT, about USD 1,249/MT) and Thailand (100,000 MT, about USD 1,359/MT), with Türkiye and Egypt also declaring. Trade remedies follow the volume: the United States issued affirmative final anti-dumping and countervailing determinations on high-chromium cast iron grinding media from India in April–May 2025; Canada opened an anti-dumping and subsidy investigation into forged grinding media from China in January 2026; and India has maintained anti-dumping duty on non-forged grinding media balls since 2012, continued against Thailand in the 2023 sunset review, so the rate at the discharge port for the mill and origin you buy from is the first check before contracting. Price is agreed per MT on grade, diameter and chemistry, and serious buyers run a marked-ball or full-charge trial before a supply contract.
