Structural Steel Sections (IPE / HEA / HEB, UB / UC, W-Beams, Angles & Channels)

Hot-rolled beams, columns, angles and channels by section series and grade

Structural sections are bought by the series and size on the drawing, and the series tells you which standard and which mills. European parallel-flange beams are IPE, with HEA, HEB and HEM wide-flange columns, dimensioned to EN 10365 (formerly DIN 1025 and Euronorm 53); British Universal Beams and Universal Columns (UB and UC) follow BS 4-1; American wide-flange W-shapes are rolled to ASTM A6 dimensions in ASTM A992, the standard grade for building frames, or A572 Grade 50. Angles (equal and unequal) and channels (UPN, UPE, PFC, C-channel) complete the long-product frame. Grades are S235JR, S275JR / J0 and S355JR / J0 / J2 to EN 10025-2 in Europe and the Gulf, ASTM A36 and A992 in the Americas and on US-specified projects, with JIS SS400 and Chinese Q235 / Q355 for Asian specifications. Section tolerances on depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, out-of-square, straightness and mass per metre follow EN 10034 for I and H sections, EN 10056 for angles, and ASTM A6 for US shapes, and a fabricator checks length tolerance and camber before it accepts a delivery. The certificate is EN 10204 type 3.1 with heat number, chemistry, yield, tensile, elongation and impact values, and where the project specification or a CE / UKCA marking under EN 1090 requires it, 3.2 with a witnessing inspector from SGS, Bureau Veritas or TÜV. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put angles, shapes and sections (HS 7216) at USD 15.45 bn, led by China at 18.0%, Spain at 10.8%, Germany at 10.8%, Türkiye at 8.6% and Luxembourg at 6.7%.

The buyers are structural steel contractors and fabricators, EPC contractors on industrial, energy and infrastructure packages, pre-engineered building makers, transmission-tower and solar-structure fabricators who consume angles, and the stockists and service centres that hold sections by the length. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers sections from Turkish, Spanish, Luxembourg, German, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, UAE and Omani mills to those buyers, against a certificate stating the country where the steel was melted and poured. From 1 July 2026 Regulation (EU) 2026/1384 replaced the EU steel safeguard with country-allocated annual tariff quotas and a 50% out-of-quota duty, and since 1 January 2026 the EU CBAM definitive period requires importers above 50 tonnes a year to be authorised CBAM declarants surrendering certificates for embedded emissions, which makes an electric-arc mill's lower emissions data a commercial document. In the United States the Section 232 proclamation effective 8 June 2026 applies 50% to articles entirely or almost entirely of steel, on full customs value, with partner-specific treatment for some origins, and anti-dumping duties apply to some section products by origin in several markets, so the buyer checks the rate for the mill and product at the discharge port before contracting. Sections ship in bundles by size, in 12 m or longer lengths, breakbulk on Handysize, Supramax and multipurpose tonnage, where CBIL's chartering desk (LaycanDesk) quotes the freight; 6 m and some 12 m lengths also move in 40-foot containers or open-tops for stockist lots. Terms are FOB, CFR and CIF, and pricing is per metric tonne on a base size with size, grade and length extras on the mill's price list, referenced to the published sections and beam price assessments rather than set by formula. Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

HEA, HEB or IPE: what is the difference?

IPE is a narrow-flange beam for bending, with a flange much narrower than its depth. HEA and HEB are wide-flange sections used as columns and heavy beams; HEB is the heavier series at the same nominal size, and HEM heavier still. UB and UC are the British equivalents and W-shapes the American ones. They are not interchangeable size for size, so specify the series your engineer designed with.

S275 or S355?

S355 has a higher minimum yield (355 MPa at the thinner thicknesses against 275 MPa) and lets the designer use lighter sections; S275 is cheaper per tonne and adequate for many frames. The sub-grade (JR, J0, J2) sets the impact test temperature and matters for exposed or cold-climate structures. Buy what the structural drawings state; substituting grades needs the engineer's approval.

Which trade measures affect section imports?

In the EU, country-allocated tariff quotas with a 50% out-of-quota duty from 1 July 2026 and the CBAM definitive period from 1 January 2026. In the United States, Section 232 at 50% on steel articles from 8 June 2026. Anti-dumping duties apply to some section products by origin in several markets; check the rate for the mill and product at your discharge port before contracting.

Can beams go in containers?

Six-metre lengths and many smaller sections fit 40-foot containers, and open-tops take some 12 m lengths. Longer lengths and large project tonnage go breakbulk in bundles by size, which usually costs less per tonne; CBIL's chartering desk quotes that freight with the steel.
