Welded Steel Pipes (ERW, LSAW, SSAW, API 5L Line Pipe, EN 10219 Hollow Sections, GI Pipe)

Line pipe, hollow sections and galvanized pipe by weld process, PSL and coating

A welded pipe is formed from coil or plate and welded along its length, and the weld process sets what it can do. ERW (electric resistance welded, high-frequency) pipe is formed from hot-rolled coil and runs from small bore to about 24 inches; it is the everyday choice for line pipe, water, structural tube and galvanized pipe. LSAW pipe is formed from plate with a straight submerged-arc weld inside and out and covers the large diameters and heavy walls of trunk pipelines, and SSAW (spiral or helical submerged-arc) pipe is formed from coil and serves large-diameter water, piling and lower-pressure lines. API 5L line pipe is ordered as PSL1 or PSL2 in grades B through X70 and higher; PSL2 adds tighter chemistry and carbon-equivalent limits, mandatory Charpy impact testing, a maximum yield and full traceability, and a sour or offshore annex where the service calls for it. Structural hollow sections to EN 10219 (S235JRH, S275J0H, S355J2H, cold-formed) are bought by fabricators and steel contractors by size, wall and length, and galvanized (GI) pipe to BS EN 10255 or ASTM A53 is bought by the length and thread for water, fire-sprinkler and scaffold use. External coatings (3LPE, 3LPP, FBE) and internal linings are specified separately. Diameter, wall, ovality and straightness tolerances follow the named standard, weld seams are ultrasonically or radiographically tested, and every length is hydrostatically tested where the standard requires it. The certificate is EN 10204 type 3.1 or, with a witnessing inspector from SGS, Bureau Veritas or TÜV, type 3.2. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put large-diameter welded pipe over 406.4 mm (HS 7305) at USD 7.90 bn, led by Germany at 20.0%, China at 16.9%, India at 11.3%, Indonesia at 9.0%, Korea at 8.0% and Türkiye at 6.0%, and other welded tubes and hollow sections (HS 7306) at USD 23.75 bn, led by Italy at 16.6%, China at 14.4%, Germany at 7.5%, Korea at 6.1% and Türkiye at 6.0%.

The buyers are pipeline EPC contractors and oil, gas and water utilities, structural steel fabricators and contractors, scaffolding and fire-protection contractors, and the pipe stockists in the Gulf, Africa and South Asia who hold ERW and GI pipe for all of them. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers welded pipe from Chinese, Indian, Turkish, Korean, UAE, Saudi and Vietnamese mills to those buyers, against a certificate stating the country where the coil or plate was melted and poured; a pipe mill often forms substrate rolled elsewhere, and the EU and UK steel import rules look at the melt-and-pour country. From 1 July 2026 Regulation (EU) 2026/1384 replaced the EU steel safeguard with country-allocated annual tariff quotas and a 50% out-of-quota duty, and since 1 January 2026 the EU CBAM definitive period requires importers above 50 tonnes a year to be authorised CBAM declarants surrendering certificates for embedded emissions. In the United States the Section 232 proclamation effective 8 June 2026 applies 50% to articles entirely or almost entirely of steel, on full customs value, with partner-specific treatment for some origins, and anti-dumping and countervailing duties apply to several welded pipe products by origin in the United States, the EU and other markets, so the rate for the specific mill and product is checked at the port of discharge before contracting. Small and medium bore pipe ships in hexagonal bundles in 20- or 40-foot containers or open-tops; large-diameter LSAW and SSAW ships loose and nested in breakbulk on Handysize and multipurpose tonnage, where CBIL's chartering desk (LaycanDesk) quotes the freight, with bevel protectors and, for coated pipe, stowage that protects the coating. Terms are FOB, CFR and CIF, or FCA and DAP for containers, and pricing is per metric tonne or per metre on grade, size, coating and inspection, referenced to the hot-rolled coil or plate market the pipe is made from. Send your standard and PSL, weld process, grade, OD and wall, length, end finish, coating, inspection and certificate type, quantity by size and discharge port.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Welded Steel Pipes (ERW, LSAW, SSAW, API 5L Line Pipe, EN 10219 Hollow Sections, GI Pipe) — buyer questions

ERW, LSAW or SSAW: which do I specify?

Diameter and service decide it. ERW covers small to medium bore up to about 24 inches and is the lowest-cost route for line, water and structural pipe. LSAW, formed from plate, covers large diameters and heavy walls for high-pressure trunk lines. SSAW, formed from coil in a spiral, reaches large diameters economically for water, piling and lower-pressure lines. Your pipeline or project specification usually names the permitted processes; send it with the enquiry.

PSL1 or PSL2 line pipe?

PSL2 is the stricter level of API 5L: tighter chemistry and carbon-equivalent limits, a maximum as well as minimum yield, mandatory Charpy impact testing and full traceability. Most oil and gas operators require PSL2 for hydrocarbon lines; PSL1 is common for water and utility work. The price difference comes from the testing and the tighter substrate, so do not buy PSL2 where the specification does not ask for it.

Which trade measures apply to welded pipe?

EU tariff quotas with a 50% out-of-quota duty from 1 July 2026 and the EU CBAM definitive period from 1 January 2026; the US Section 232 duty at 50% on steel articles from 8 June 2026; and anti-dumping and countervailing duties on specific welded pipe products by origin in several markets. Those are set per mill and product, so check the rate at your discharge port before contracting.

How does large-diameter pipe ship?

Large LSAW and SSAW pipe goes breakbulk, loose and often nested smaller inside larger to save space, with bevel protectors and coating-safe dunnage. Small and medium bore pipe goes in hexagonal bundles in containers or open-tops. CBIL runs a chartering desk, so breakbulk freight is quoted with the cargo.
