Feldspar & Nepheline Syenite

Sodium and potassium feldspar and nepheline syenite by alkali, alumina and iron

Feldspar (HS 2529.10) and nepheline syenite (HS 2529.30) are the fluxes of the ceramics and glass industries: they supply the alkalis that melt a tile body or glass batch at a workable temperature, and the alumina that makes glass tougher and more durable. Sodium feldspar is classed on Na₂O, Fe₂O₃ and TiO₂ and is the main flux in porcelain tile, sanitaryware, tableware, frit and glaze, and glass. Potassium feldspar is classed on K₂O; Indian producers sell body grades above 10.5% K₂O and glaze grades above 11.5%, and potassium feldspar gives a wider firing range. Iron and titanium decide fired whiteness and glass colour, so white-firing and glass grades carry the lowest Fe₂O₃. Nepheline syenite is a feldspathoid rock with more alkali and alumina than feldspar; published comparisons give Canadian material about 23.2% Al₂O₃ and 0.10% Fe₂O₃ and Norwegian material about 24.2% Al₂O₃ and 0.11% Fe₂O₃, and glass makers use it as an alumina source for scratch and thermal resistance. Feldspar sells as granular material for tile bodies and glass and as fine powder for glazes, paint, plastics and engineered stone, dried to low moisture.

UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put HS 2529.10 feldspar at USD 629 million across the reporters in the pull, led by Türkiye (41.4%, 5.20 million MT), South Africa (14.6%), India (10.4%), Thailand (4.8%), Morocco (4.4%), China (4.0%), France (3.0%), Italy (2.6%) and Spain (2.2%); HS 2529.30 nepheline syenite was USD 182 million, led by Canada (66.0%) and Norway (21.6%). CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers feldspar and nepheline syenite between miners, processors and trader allocations on one side and ceramic tile, sanitaryware, tableware, frit, glass and glaze plants on the other, in bulk vessel lots, 1–1.5 MT jumbo bags or 25 kg bags in containers, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Offers stand against an SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek analysis of Na₂O, K₂O, Al₂O₃, SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, TiO₂, CaO and loss on ignition, with sieve analysis and moisture, a certificate of origin and a safety data sheet. Price is negotiated per grade and cargo. Send the grade, the alkali and iron targets, granular or powder, and the discharge port, and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Feldspar & Nepheline Syenite — buyer questions

Sodium or potassium feldspar?

Sodium feldspar is the main flux for porcelain tile, sanitaryware, frit and glass, and is classed on Na₂O, Fe₂O₃ and TiO₂. Potassium feldspar gives a wider firing range and is sold in India above 10.5% K₂O for bodies and above 11.5% for glazes. Many plants blend both.

Where does most traded feldspar come from?

UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations for HS 2529.10 total USD 629 million in the reporters pulled, with Türkiye at 41.4% (5.20 million MT), South Africa 14.6%, India 10.4%, Thailand 4.8% and China 4.0%.

What is nepheline syenite used for?

It is a higher-alkali, higher-alumina flux than feldspar. Glass makers use it as an alumina source for scratch resistance, thermal endurance and durability, and ceramic makers use it in bodies and glazes. Canada (66.0%) and Norway (21.6%) dominated HS 2529.30 exports in UN Comtrade 2024 declarations.

What documents come with a feldspar parcel?

An SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek analysis of Na₂O, K₂O, Al₂O₃, SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, TiO₂, CaO and loss on ignition, with sieve analysis and moisture, plus a certificate of origin, a safety data sheet and the bill of lading.
