Construction Aggregates (Gabbro, Granite & Armour Rock)

Gabbro, granite and armour rock in Supramax lots

Aggregates under HS 2517.10 are sold on mechanical performance, not chemistry, and every ready-mix, asphalt and marine contractor has the same short list of tests. Los Angeles abrasion (≤ 25–30% for concrete and asphalt wearing course, ≤ 40% for sub-base) says whether the stone will break down under the mixer and under traffic; aggregate crushing value and aggregate impact value (≤ 25–30%) say much the same in the BS system. Flakiness and elongation indices (≤ 20–25%) decide workability in concrete and interlock in asphalt; water absorption (≤ 1–2%) predicts freeze-thaw and asphalt binder demand; and soundness (≤ 12% magnesium sulphate) catches stone that looks fine and weathers to mud. Chloride (≤ 0.01–0.03%) and sulphate (≤ 0.2–0.4%) limits protect reinforcing steel, which is why washed, low-salt gabbro and granite hold a premium over coastal limestone in the Gulf. Gradation is contracted to the buyer's standard: 5–10, 10–20 and 20–40 mm single-size for concrete, 0–5 mm crusher dust and manufactured sand, 0–40 mm sub-base and, at the heavy end, 1–3 t and 3–6 t armour rock and core rock for breakwaters and reclamation.

This is the most freight-dominated cargo we handle. UN Comtrade, 2025 export declarations: Oman exported 12.02 million MT of HS 2517 at USD 6/MT FOB, Indonesia 9.20 million MT at USD 7, Malaysia 5.90 million MT at USD 9, India 4.99 million MT at USD 13, Canada 9.24 million MT at USD 17. A Supramax of Omani gabbro is worth roughly USD 300,000 loaded and the voyage to the Indian subcontinent, Bangladesh, the Maldives or East Africa is a multiple of that, so a good aggregate deal is a good freight deal: geared tonnage for ports without shore cranes, self-trimming holds, laytime that matches the quarry's loading rate, and a discharge berth draft that lets you fill the ship. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company that also runs a chartering desk (LaycanDesk), and Oman boulder and armour-rock cargoes are on our book now. We place the stone against SGS or Intertek test certificates (LA, ACV, flakiness, absorption, chloride, sulphate, gradation) on FOB, CFR and CIF terms in Handymax and Supramax parcels of 30,000–58,000 MT, and the stone and the ship are quoted together. Send your standard (BS, ASTM or EN), the sizes you need and the discharge port, and we work the quarry and the tonnage against them.

Need the ship as well? Our chartering desk prices bulk limestone, gypsum and aggregates freight on LaycanDesk.

Construction Aggregates (Gabbro, Granite & Armour Rock) — buyer questions

Why gabbro rather than limestone aggregate?

Gabbro and granite are harder (LA abrasion typically 12–20% against 25–35% for limestone), absorb less water and carry far less chloride and sulphate, which is why concrete and asphalt specifications in the Gulf, the Maldives and the subcontinent lean on them. Limestone aggregate is fine for sub-base and mass fill and is cheaper on the quay, but it is not the stone for a wearing course or reinforced concrete near the sea.

How should I compare quotes when FOB is USD 6–13/MT?

On delivered cost per tonne into your berth, and only that. At those FOB levels (UN Comtrade, 2025 export declarations for Oman, Indonesia, Malaysia and India) the freight is usually two to four times the cargo value, so a cheaper quarry two days further from your port is not cheaper. Ask every seller the same three things: geared or gearless, guaranteed loading rate, and whether they will quote CFR. We quote CFR with the ship named.

Can you supply armour rock and boulders?

Yes. Armour rock is graded by weight (1–3 t, 3–6 t and larger on request), sourced from Omani quarries, tested for density (≥ 2.6 t/m³), absorption and soundness, and loaded loose by excavator. Cargo weight, not volume, fills the ship, and stowage and trimming are planned with the quarry before fixing. Oman boulder cargoes are on our chartering desk now.

Which standard do you test to?

Whichever your project specifies: BS 812 / BS 882, ASTM C33 / C131, or EN 12620 / EN 1097. The load-port certificate from SGS or Intertek covers gradation, LA abrasion or ACV, flakiness and elongation, water absorption, soundness, chloride and sulphate, so your engineer can sign it off before the ship sails rather than after it arrives.
