Dolomitic Lime & Burnt Dolomite (Doloma)

Calcined dolomite by MgO and CaO for steel slag conditioning and refractories

Burnt dolomite under HS 2518.20 is dolomite rock, a calcium magnesium carbonate, fired until it gives up its carbon dioxide and leaves a mixed calcium and magnesium oxide. Soft-burnt dolomitic lime stays reactive and goes into the converter or electric arc furnace alongside high-calcium lime; dead-burned dolomite, fired to a dense, less reactive grain, is a refractory raw material. The steelmaker adds lime and dolomite to set slag basicity and to saturate the slag with MgO, because a slag already saturated in magnesia takes less of it from the magnesia-carbon lining, and MgO-saturated or MgO–CaO slags suit the electric arc furnace. A published patent for a steelmaking flux blends burnt lime and burnt dolomitic lime at about 10–40% MgO with the balance CaO, preferably around 30% MgO, because mixtures outside that range melt at higher temperatures. The contract numbers are therefore MgO and CaO, silica and iron, loss on ignition for the soft-burnt product, bulk density for dead-burned grain, and size.

UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2518.20 total about USD 142 million across reporters, led by Belgium at USD 78.6 million and 274,000 MT (55%), then the USA (USD 12.8 million, 64,000 MT), Italy (USD 11.0 million), Canada (USD 9.7 million), China (USD 8.1 million, 55,000 MT) and Spain (USD 5.7 million); it is a regional, producer-led trade. Chinese magnesia-bearing material should be checked against China's export licence catalogue for the year before an offer is accepted. Why do steel plants add burnt dolomite as well as lime?

To put MgO into the slag. Lime and dolomite set basicity and saturate the slag with magnesia, so the slag takes less MgO from the magnesia-carbon lining.

What is the difference between soft-burnt and dead-burned dolomite?

Soft-burnt dolomitic lime is fired to drive off CO₂ and stays reactive, for use as flux. Dead-burned dolomite is fired to a dense, less reactive grain for refractories.
