Raw Dolomite (Flux, Glass & Refractory Grade)

Uncalcined dolomite by MgO, CaO, silica and size for blast furnaces, steel shops, glass and refractories

Dolomite is calcium magnesium carbonate, and raw dolomite is the stone as quarried, crushed and screened, before any calcining. Steel is the main buyer. A blast furnace or sinter plant charges it as a flux that brings magnesia into the slag, and wants CaO of 28 to 30% and MgO of 18 to 20% at least. A steel melting shop is stricter because every unit of silica costs lime: SMS grade holds silica at 3% or less, iron oxide plus alumina at 2% or less and total insolubles under 7%, and ferro-alloy furnaces ask for silica of 2% or less. Float and container glass makers buy on iron, because iron colours the glass, and on a tightly sized, washed grain. Refractory producers dead-burn a dense, low-impurity stone into doloma for furnace linings, and farmers spread ground dolomite as a liming material that also supplies magnesium. Lump is sold in size bands such as 10 to 40 mm and 40 to 80 mm for furnaces, with fines of 0 to 3 mm for sinter feed. Calcined products are a different heading and a different page.

India is the largest import market, at about 6.0 million MT in 2024: 2.6 million MT came overland from Bhutan, about 2.0 million MT by sea from quarry ports inside the Gulf and about 1.2 million MT from Oman, with Thailand and China supplying the rest. Landed values were about USD 18 to 25 per tonne. Japan imported about 2.0 million MT at USD 36 to 38 per tonne, mostly from China and Thailand, and the United States about 2.6 million MT, mostly from Canada. The Strait of Hormuz has been severely restricted since 28 February 2026, so the Gulf-coast tonnage that Indian steel plants relied on is not active supply, and stone exports from those ports fell by more than nine-tenths in March 2026. Oman, which exported about 1.25 million MT of dolomite in 2024 at about USD 10 per tonne FOB, and Thailand, at about 1.5 million MT and USD 12, load outside the strait. CBIL brokers raw dolomite from Omani and Thai quarries in Handysize and Supramax lots against SGS or Intertek certification of MgO, CaO, SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, Al₂O₃, loss on ignition, moisture and size distribution, with draft-survey quantity. Dolomite ships under the IMSBC Code as a Group C cargo that neither liquefies nor carries a chemical hazard, at a stowage factor of about 0.6 to 0.7 m³ per tonne, on FOB and CFR terms. Because CBIL also runs a chartering desk, LaycanDesk, the freight is quoted with the stone.

Raw Dolomite (Flux, Glass & Refractory Grade) — buyer questions

What is the difference between BF grade and SMS grade dolomite?

Silica and insolubles. A blast furnace makes a large slag volume and tolerates more gangue, so BF grade is specified mainly on MgO (18 to 20% min) and CaO (28 to 30% min). A steel melting shop adds dolomite to protect its lining and condition the slag, and every unit of silica has to be neutralised with lime, so SMS grade holds SiO₂ at 3% or less and iron oxide plus alumina at 2% or less. Ferro-alloy grade is tighter again on silica.

Who buys raw dolomite by sea?

Integrated steel plants on both Indian coasts are the largest seaborne buyers: India imported about 6.0 million MT in 2024, of which about 3.4 million MT arrived by sea. Japanese steel and glass makers took about 2.0 million MT. Most other steel industries use domestic stone. Indian buyers land dolomite at about USD 18 to 25 per tonne, so freight is as large a part of the price as the stone.

Where can dolomite load now that Gulf quarry ports are restricted?

The Strait of Hormuz has been severely restricted since 28 February 2026, and the quarry ports that sent India about 2.0 million MT of dolomite in 2024 are inside it. Oman loads outside the strait and already supplied India with about 1.2 million MT; Thailand ships to India, Japan and Southeast Asia. Each offer names the quarry and the load port.

Is raw dolomite the same product as burnt dolomite?

No. Raw dolomite (HS 2518.10) is the carbonate stone. Calcined or burnt dolomite and dead-burned doloma (HS 2518.20) have had the carbon dioxide driven off in a kiln, weigh about half as much per unit of magnesia, react with moisture and ship under different conditions. A steel shop may buy either; state which in the enquiry.
