Quarry blocks by colour, size class and soundness for slab processors in China, Italy and the Middle East

A granite block is bought by the cubic metre and judged with a hammer and a wet cloth: the processor wants a sound, rectangular block of consistent colour and grain with no hairline cracks, veins or dark inclusions, because every defect becomes a broken or downgraded slab after the gang saw. The trade grades blocks by size class (full gang-saw blocks against smaller and container-limited blocks, at a granite density of about 2.7 t/m³), by shape (rough-trimmed and squared blocks command more than crude, wedge-shaped ones) and by colour family and quarry name, since a slab yard sells by name and needs the same face across a project. India is the dominant exporter of raw blocks: UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2516.11 (granite, crude or roughly trimmed) total about USD 469 million and 4.09 million MT, with India at 2.61 million MT (USD 279 million, about USD 107/MT declared), followed by South Africa (163,000 MT, about USD 183/MT), Spain (211,000 MT), Zimbabwe (193,000 MT), Portugal, Italy, Norway (54,000 MT), Brazil (27,000 MT) and Germany. China took roughly four fifths of India's block exports by volume in 2024, with Algeria and the UAE the next destinations, according to trade-data summaries of the same year. Norway's blocks are the larvikite family, South Africa's the black and red granites, and Brazil supplies exotic and light-coloured varieties.

The buyers are block importers and slab processors around Xiamen in Fujian, the Verona and Carrara stone districts in Italy, and the marble and granite factories serving Gulf and North African construction, plus monument makers who want black granite of consistent tone. Indian exporters need an importer-exporter code, a valid quarry lease and state mineral transport permits behind every block; the export shipping bill is filed under 25161100. Blocks move breakbulk on geared vessels or as two to three blocks per 20-ft container within the container's payload, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms; loading port, crane capacity and the stowage of odd-shaped blocks are part of the quotation. Price is agreed per cubic metre by colour, size class and quality.
