Magnesium Fertilizers: Kieserite, Epsom Salt & Magnesium Nitrate

Kieserite 25–27% MgO / 20% S, Epsom salt 16% MgO and magnesium nitrate | oil palm, citrus and fertigation

Kieserite is magnesium sulphate monohydrate and the standard soil magnesium source for plantation crops: German mined kieserite is sold at 25% MgO (15.1% Mg) and 50% SO₃ (20.8% S) as round granules for wide spreading or as a fine grade, extracted from the crude salt deposits in Germany, and Chinese synthetic kieserite from Liaoning runs 25–27% MgO and 20–22% S in powder and granular form. Both magnesium and sulphur are water-soluble and immediately available, which is why kieserite rather than dolomite is used where the palm shows magnesium deficiency; the German producer's oil palm guidance is 1.5 kg of kieserite per palm per year, with sulphur usually supplied through the same product or ammonium sulphate. Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate heptahydrate) carries 16% MgO (9.6% Mg) and 32.5% SO₃ (13% S), dissolves completely and is the foliar and fertigation grade for citrus, vegetables, vines and greenhouse crops, blendable with most liquid fertilizers and crop-protection products. Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate (Mg(NO₃)₂·6H₂O) at 10.5% N and 9.4% Mg is the nitrate-form magnesium for hydroponics and greenhouse recipes where sulphate must be kept down; it is hygroscopic and ships as an oxidiser under UN 1474.

Trade data show where the tonnage comes from: 2023 exports of magnesium sulphate (HS 2833.21) were about USD 325 million, led by China (39%), Germany (27.4%), Ireland (12.3%), India (2.8%) and the United States (2.7%). The buyers are oil palm and rubber estates and their input traders in Southeast Asia and West Africa, citrus and vegetable growers, fertigation formulators and NPK blenders adding magnesium to compound grades. CBIL brokers magnesium fertilizers against an SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas certificate of analysis for MgO, S, water-insolubles, moisture and granule size, with the certificate of origin, in 25 kg bags palletised in 20 ft containers and 1,000 kg jumbo bags, and kieserite in bulk breakbulk parcels for plantation buyers who take full stems. Magnesium nitrate is documented as a Class 5.1 oxidiser for sea freight. Prices are negotiated per MT on grade and pack.
