Potassium chloride, 60% K₂O, granular & standard

Muriate of potash is potassium chloride, about 95–98% KCl, sold on a single headline number, potassium oxide equivalent at 60% minimum (some standard grades run 61–62%), and on the grade, which describes particle size rather than chemistry. Granular MOP, screened to about 2–4 mm, is the direct-application and bulk-blending product because it spreads and blends evenly with granular urea and DAP. Standard grade is finer, below 1 mm, and goes to compound NPK manufacturers who granulate it with other nutrients, and to markets that still broadcast fine potash. Colour ranges from white to deep red depending on the iron in the ore and the process, and as with DAP it tells you nothing about K₂O. Moisture at 0.5% maximum and an anti-caking treatment matter more than most buyers expect, because MOP cakes hard in a damp hold and arrives as slabs.

Buy MOP for anything that is not chloride-sensitive: cereals, oilseeds, sugar cane, oil palm, cotton and most field crops, and for NPK manufacture where potash is the cheapest source of K. Buy SOP instead for tobacco, potatoes, fruit, vegetables and salt-affected or irrigated soils where chloride harms the crop or accumulates. The trade is dominated by Canada, Russia and Belarus, of which we work only Canadian material, together with Jordan on the Dead Sea; those origin constraints are part of the specification for this desk and are applied without discussion. Granular or standard grade?

Granular for direct spreading and for bulk blends with other granular products, so nothing segregates in the truck or the spreader. Standard grade, which is finer, for compound NPK manufacturers who granulate it themselves and for markets that broadcast fine product by hand. Standard is a little cheaper; granular saves you the segregation problem. Do not put standard grade into a granular blend.

MOP or SOP?

MOP unless chloride hurts the crop or the soil. Tobacco, potatoes, most fruit and vegetables and many irrigated and saline soils want sulphate of potash, which costs roughly twice as much per unit of K₂O. Everything else, cereals, oilseeds, cane, palm, cotton, runs happily on muriate, which is why MOP is nine-tenths of the potash trade.

Which origins can you supply?

Canada is the largest exporter we work, with Jordan, Chile and Germany as alternatives depending on lane and grade. Two of the world's three biggest potash producers are origins this desk does not deal in, and that constraint stands regardless of price. Tell us the destination port and we will price the origins that clear it.

How do I stop potash caking in transit?

Specify moisture at 0.5% maximum, anti-caking treatment for any voyage over a few weeks or into a humid destination, and covered dry storage at both ends. MOP that gets damp sets into slabs that have to be broken by machine, and the finer standard grade cakes worse than granular. A moisture certificate at load is cheap insurance.
