NPK 15-15-15 Compound Fertilizer

Balanced compound NPK, every granule the same analysis

A compound NPK is a manufactured granule in which every particle carries the declared nitrogen, phosphate and potash, as distinct from a bulk blend, which is a physical mix of separate granules that can segregate. 15-15-15 is the reference grade, sold on total N 15%, available P₂O₅ 15% of which a stated fraction is water-soluble, K₂O 15%, moisture at 1.5–2% maximum and size 2–4 mm; the same plants make 16-16-16, 17-17-17, 20-10-10, 12-24-12, 20-20-0 and chloride-free or sulphur-added variants. What separates good compound from bad is the nitrogen form (ammoniacal, nitrate or urea, which behave differently in soil and are declared on a proper certificate), the water-solubility of the phosphate, hardness and dust, and whether the potash is from muriate or sulphate. A 'compound' that is a coated blend of DAP, urea and MOP granules is a different, cheaper product and should be sold as one.

Buy compound NPK where an even application of all three nutrients matters and the farmer cannot blend: smallholder agriculture across Africa and Asia, government and cooperative tender programmes, rice and maize basal dressing, plantations, and horticulture. Buy separate straights and blend where the buyer has blending capacity, because the straights are cheaper per unit of nutrient. Compound NPK moves in Handysize and Supramax bulk parcels from China, Europe, Morocco and the Gulf, and very largely in 50 kg bags into tender markets, where bag print, weight tolerance and packing certificates are contractual. Compound or blend?

Compound when the user cannot blend and needs every granule to carry the full analysis: smallholders, tenders, hand application. Blend when the buyer has a blending plant and can buy straights, because urea, DAP and MOP cost less per unit of nutrient than the same nutrients in a compound. A blend segregates in handling; a compound does not. Price the two on delivered nutrient and on who is applying it.

Why does the nitrogen form matter?

Because 15% N can be urea, ammonium or nitrate nitrogen, and they behave differently: nitrate is immediately available and leaches, ammonium is held by the soil, urea has to convert first and can volatilise. A certificate that gives only total N hides this. Ask for the split, and choose the grade whose form suits the crop timing and the soil.

What does a tender specification usually require?

The full analysis with N by form and water-soluble P₂O₅, granule size, moisture, printed 50 kg bags with weight tolerance, a packing list, independent inspection at load with sealed samples, and origin and shipping documents in a prescribed form. Bag print and weight are where tenders are lost; get the artwork and the tolerance agreed before the plant starts bagging.

Can you supply chloride-free or sulphur-added grades?

Yes. Sulphur-added grades, such as 15-15-15 with 9% S, are standard from several producers and suit sulphur-deficient soils. Chloride-free compounds use sulphate of potash instead of muriate and cost more; they are for tobacco, potatoes, fruit and vegetables. Tell us the crop and the soil and we will name the grade rather than the other way round.
