UAN Solution 28 / 30 / 32
Urea ammonium nitrate liquid nitrogen, tanker parcels
UAN is a clear liquid nitrogen fertilizer made by dissolving urea and ammonium nitrate in water, sold on its total nitrogen: 28%, 30% or 32% by weight. The grade is a trade-off against cold. Producer specification sheets give salt-out temperatures of about minus 18 °C for UAN-28, minus 9 °C for UAN-30 and 0 °C for UAN-32, so the strongest grade is cheapest to ship per unit of N but crystallises in unheated tanks in a northern winter, while UAN-28 stays liquid. The same sheets give densities of about 1.28, 1.30 and 1.33 kg per litre at 16 °C, free ammonia at 500 ppm maximum and a corrosion inhibitor dosed at roughly 130–250 ppm to protect carbon-steel tanks and pipework. Buyers choose UAN over granular nitrogen because it goes through sprayers, fertigation and in-furrow systems, mixes with herbicides and sulphur solutions, and applies evenly without a spreader.
UN Comtrade 2024 data put reported world UAN exports (HS 3102.80) at about USD 1.08 billion, led by Trinidad and Tobago (22.8%), the United States (21.8%), the Netherlands (18.6%), Canada (13.8%) and Lithuania (8.5%), with Slovakia and Belgium behind. The trade is logistics-led: UAN moves in clean product tankers into terminals with shore tanks, and a buyer without tankage cannot take a sea parcel. CBIL brokers UAN against an SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas certificate of analysis for total nitrogen, density and free ammonia at load, tank-cleanliness and previous-cargo records, a certificate of origin and the destination import documents, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, and our chartering desk sizes the parcel to the discharge terminal. Egypt applies a 10% export duty on nitrogen fertilizers under Decree No. 258 of 2026. Prices follow published UAN assessments such as Argus, CRU and Profercy, per MT of solution on grade.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

UAN Solution 28 / 30 / 32 — buyer questions
UAN-28, 30 or 32: which grade?
UAN-32 carries the most nitrogen per tonne of freight but salts out at about 0 °C; UAN-28 stays liquid to about minus 18 °C. Buy on your coldest storage temperature: if tanks are unheated in winter, freight savings on UAN-32 can be lost to crystallised product. Many terminals import 32 and dilute to 28 for the season.
What infrastructure do I need to import UAN by sea?
A berth that takes a product tanker, shore tanks in carbon or stainless steel sized for the parcel, and pumps and lines for discharge. Without tankage the sea trade is closed to you; ISO tanks or flexitanks work only for small lots at a much higher cost per tonne of N.
What is certified at load?
Total nitrogen, density, free ammonia and inhibitor content by SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas, with shore-tank and ship-tank samples retained, plus previous-cargo and tank-cleanliness records for the vessel. Quantity is by shore tank or ship figures as the contract states.
Which origins ship UAN?
UN Comtrade 2024 data show Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada and Lithuania supplied about 85% of reported UAN exports. Freight distance matters more for a liquid of 28–32% N than for urea, so the right origin depends on your discharge port.
