Sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHCO₃, HS 2836.30) is made by carbonating soda ash or trona liquor, and the plant sells one chemistry into four regulatory worlds. Food grade is declared as additive E500(ii) in the EU and meets the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) for bakery raising agents, beverages and confectionery; pharmaceutical grade meets the United States Pharmacopeia monograph (USP), the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) or the European Pharmacopoeia for antacids, haemodialysis concentrates and effervescent tablets; feed grade goes into dairy and poultry rations as a rumen buffer and a sodium source; and technical grade is used in flue-gas treatment, fire-extinguisher powders, leather tanning, textile processing and cleaning products. The certificate shows assay, loss on drying, pH of a 1% solution, heavy metals, arsenic, chloride, ammonium and particle size, because a bakery wants a fine powder that reacts evenly and a feed mill wants a coarser, free-flowing granule. Food and pharma buyers ask for the grade monograph on the certificate of analysis (COA), the safety data sheet (SDS), a certificate of origin, and halal or kosher certificates where their market requires them; EU importers need the producer's REACH registration covered for the tonnage band. Sodium bicarbonate is not classified as dangerous goods for sea transport, so it moves as general cargo.
