Liquid water glass by weight ratio and Baumé, solid glass lumps and powder for detergents, foundries and silica

Sodium silicate is bought on two numbers, the SiO₂:Na₂O weight ratio and the density in degrees Baumé, and the ratio decides what it is for. Industry grades run from about 1:2 to 3.75:1; ratios below about 2.85:1 are called alkaline and higher ratios neutral. Published producer grades show how the pairs sit together: a ratio of 1.95–2.05 at 49.5–50.5 °Bé, 2.35–2.45 at 51.5–52.5 °Bé, and 3.17–3.27 at 41.0–42.0 °Bé. Low-ratio alkaline liquors go into detergents (as a builder and corrosion inhibitor), textile scouring and de-inking; the 2.4 ratio is the general-purpose adhesive and paper-tube grade; the 3.2–3.3 ratio is the foundry CO₂-process binder, the silica-gel and precipitated-silica feedstock, the soil-stabilisation and grouting liquor and the concrete sealer. Solid sodium silicate (glass lumps) is the furnace product before dissolving, sold to buyers who run their own dissolver and want to pay freight on 100% solids instead of a liquor that is more than half water; spray-dried powder serves detergent and cleaning compounders. On the certificate the buyer reads SiO₂ %, Na₂O %, ratio, Baumé or specific gravity at 20 °C, water-insolubles, iron and, for lumps, colour and size. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2839.19 total about USD 477 million across 77 reporters: Poland USD 73 million and 191,000 MT, China USD 64 million and 225,000 MT, the Netherlands USD 51 million, Egypt USD 34 million and 44,000 MT, Germany USD 31 million and 97,000 MT, the USA USD 27 million, Spain USD 22 million and 58,000 MT, Brazil USD 21 million, Malaysia USD 19 million and 67,000 MT, India USD 12 million and 44,000 MT, and Thailand USD 10 million and 32,000 MT. Those are declared values that blend liquid and solid grades, not offers.

The buyer is a powder-detergent or liquid-cleaner plant, a foundry running the CO₂ sand process, a silica-gel or precipitated-silica producer, a paper-tube and corrugating adhesive maker, a textile mill, a geotechnical contractor grouting soil, a drilling-fluids company, a refractory or welding-rod manufacturer, or a water utility using it for corrosion control. Detergent and silica plants take liquid in bulk; foundries and distributors take drums and IBCs; buyers far from a furnace take lumps and dissolve them. Documents are the certificate of analysis (COA) with ratio and Baumé, the safety data sheet (SDS), a certificate of origin and REACH registration cover for EU imports.
